Quality Standards And Terms

To ensure that you get a high quality finished antique wide plank floor, here is what we will do for you, and need from you.

All flooring is heat treated to kill pests in accord with forestry Canada's standards.

The boards are then slowly kiln dried to 6%-8% moisture content before milling, to ensure minimal waste, and accurate milling.

All flooring arrives on the job site planed to 3/4 of an inch, stress relieved on the bottom, and tongue and grooved on both sides. These are default standards, and your antique plank lumber will be delivered this way unless otherwise specified on the contract, or in writing prior to production.

All of our wide plank floor boards come in random widths from 3 inches to 11 inches wide, and the length can vary from about 18 inches to 12+ feet.

The job site must be sealed with all doors and windows in place before the plank flooring arrives. The furnace or HVAC unit must be operational to stabilize the moisture levels in the house prior to receiving the antique plank flooring.

***This is the most critical stage of your project! The humidity level in your home MUST BE MAINTAINED AT THE HUMIDITY LEVEL THAT YOU'RE GOING TO HAVE WHEN YOU LIVE THERE.

Construction produces a lot of humidity as water based supplies dry into the atmosphere and get trapped inside the house. This will cause the wood to swell during acclimation, then the wood will shrink after construction is over and the house dries out.

Just leaving the windows open is not sufficient to control this humidity as weather conditions change quickly and constantly and when the windows are closed over night the moisture will be trapped inside the home.

Wood dust will not damage the furnace or air handling units like drywall and tile dust does. In over 32 years we have never caused the failure of any air handling unit.

The wood should then be allowed to acclimatize for about a week in the room that it will be installed, to help the moisture content of the wood equalize to your home. If you can acclimate longer please do so. The wood can't acclimate too long but it can acclimate for too short of a period of time.

All antique plank flooring species may have knots, knot holes, nail holes, hairline cracks, figuring, bug scars, spalting, and some discolouration. This is due to the natural aging process, which also produces the patina, and valued rustic look. Many of these defects are corrected at the time of installation or are hidden by your antique wood installer under cabinets, in closets, etc.

It is your installer's responsibility to make sure that these naturally occurring marks are placed in a tasteful manner.

If you have not chosen us to do your wide plank floor installation, we recommend purchasing an extra 10% of flooring material for off cuts, and waste created during installation. The installer has the final say on what boards go where, so ensure that they know what you are trying to accomplish. For example, boards that you do not like the look of should be hidden in closets, or under cabinets.

Special Order Flooring Items

The special order flooring types we offer are Heart Pine, Oak  and Chestnut

Due to the fact that there are limited supplies of these species of antique lumber in Canada, we may need to purchase these materials from the United States of America. Otherwise, we would not be able to fill your production order in a timely fashion.

If a special order is made, we will require 100% of the purchase price of the flooring before we can start your flooring order. These materials are non-refundable and non-returnable, as we will not be able to return them to our supplier.

In the event that one of our Canadian suppliers has accumulated sufficient stock of Heart Pine or Chestnut to fill your order without purchasing American supplies, then a standard deposit and payment schedule applies to your order.
